House Republicans have a vision for improving
healthcare, making our state safer, improving education, bringing jobs to
Tennessee and strengthening families and communities. However, none of
these things will come to be unless there are fundamental changes in the
way the legislature and the rest of state government do business.
Last year we heard a lot about cuts in state
government. Yet our budget grew by 1 billion dollars during the last
budget cycle. This level of growth is unsustainable.
Republicans will work to streamline government, lower the tax
burden on Tennesseans and continue fighting against an income tax.
In 1999, the
people of Tennessee spoke in no uncertain terms. You didn't want an
income tax and Republicans listened. The House Republican Caucus took a
stand against an income tax and we reaffirmed the position this year.
But, it is not
enough to be against an income tax. It is incumbent upon us to not just
shout our opposition from the rooftops, but to propose practical solutions
that will forestall the push for an income tax.
The House
Republican Caucus has put forth innovative proposals that will rein in
spending and save taxpayer dollars.
