House Republicans propose
a comprehensive, independent audit of every dollar that the state spends
to eliminate waste, fraud, abuse and duplication of services. We will use
the information from this audit to redirect resources to priority
functions of state government and reduce the tax burden on Tennesseans.
Some will say that we can’t afford such an audit.
Well, we can’t afford not to do this audit. Thanks to the President’s tax
relief packages, our economy is getting stronger and state revenues are
up. In the end, this process will probably save us more money than the
cost of the audit.
Before we talk about cutting services or others
talk about an income tax again, the people of this state deserve to know
that our fiscal house is in order. We owe it to them to ensure their
government is efficient and well-managed.
Under our plan, state agencies will be held
accountable for their spending. If they do not implement the
recommendations of this audit or any future audits from the Comptroller,
their budgets will be cut.
