Another priority for House Republicans in 2004 is education. Our vision for education in Tennessee is simple and clear: to give every child in Tennessee access to a world-class system of education and learning.

Sadly, our state has underperformed in education. Tennessee ranks near the bottom in the country at graduation rates and college entrance examination scores. Over 40% of Tennessee’s 8^th graders don’t meet basic requirements in Math and Science on standardized tests. Children are being cheated of the only opportunity they have to get an education and they deserve better.

Republicans will utilize flexibility, innovation and accountability to improve our schools. 

• We will improve our public charter school law. 
• We will support and promote alternative teacher licensure. 
• We will work to encourage parental and public involvement in our schools. 
• We will support those who choose to home-school and fight for the equalization of HOPE scholarship requirements for those children.
